Enclosure No.1.

Petition of 4th October, 1938 to District Officer, North

from Cheung Li Shi and her daughter-in-law, Cheung Mak

Shi, both residing at Tong Sheung Tsun Village, Lam Tsun

Valley, Taipo.

Precis.

Petitioners respectfully ask for the District

Officer's recommendation to the Mid-Atlantic Shipping

Company Limited for grant of gratuities to petitioners as a

means of assistance to petitioners' livelihood.

Cheung Kwai Wan, aged 25, employee in the Mid-

Atlantic Shipping Company was the first born son of Petitioner

Cheung Li Shi. He used to sign his name as Ah Wan (in

typical native accent, "Ah Wing"). In June this year, he was

on board a ship sailing from Marseilles and was killed at

9 p.m. on 21st June when the ship was bombed.

Petitioners have received a letter from the people

on board the boat certifying that petitioner Cheung Li Shi's

first son was killed on board. The deceased, having died

suddenly, left several helpless dependants at home. Therefore,

they crave for the D.0.'s recommendation to the Mid-Atlantic

Shipping Company that the practice of granting gratuities to

employees may be applied to this case of Ah Wing's death.

They ask that the gratuities may be remitted to the District

Office, Taipo, so that petitioners may be able to receive the

money from the District Officer.

The deceased is survived by a mother, Cheung Li Shi;

Wife, Cheung Mak Shi; a daughter, Ah Hor; younger brothers,

Cheung Shu Wan and Cheung Mi Wan; and sister-in-law,

Cheung Pang Shi.

Dated 4.10.1938.
